"I didn't blog much lately," is an understatement.

And yes, I hasn't been blogging mainly because I was super busy during the month of December and also for the first few weeks in January.

See, I'm in kinda of a delima here, weather or not to continue to with Bananatalk 2.0 or start a Bananatalk 3.0

Why the change?

Mainly because that I'm married now, and there's so much things that I would want to share which is sometimes way too personal. And Bananatalk 2.0 being less personal, more info based and car stuff, and even sometimes when personal stuff do get posted, its heavily censored, names changed, points of referenced was used instead of actually describing the matter. Then again, Bananatalk 1.0 (friendster blog) was personal.

And to add on to that, I'm having less time to blog nowadays. Whenever I get home it's always house chores first, THEN and only then turn on the laptop or watch youtube on the TV. One thing about youtube, it numbs out the mind, like taking vodka shots. By the time I finished an hour of youtube videos, I'm too sedated to think or to blog anything. I'd then continue for another hour before hitting the sack.

It's an unnecessary long list of items to make you feel that you bought a house for RM1599. Personally I couldn't be bothered with the preinstalled software like cyberlink power dvd, mcafee and software by dell. I like by system trimmed, free from unwanted garbage. But for the system spec that I got, even with the unwanted garbage, it doesn't feel weight down, slow or sluggish. Except for the mcafee update part. Anyways, the summary of the N5050 hardware is as follows.

The number one reason why I got this dell is because it's cheap. At RM1599, it's a steal for a 15.6 inch display laptop powered by an intel i3 sandy bridge with 4GB of RAM.
And it's also 'cheap' cheap. Laptop feels cheap, with lots of hollow parts especially the keyboard which I disliked the most. Typing on the N5050 can be very noisy. This is all due to the design of the laptop itself.

Take a look at the back of the N5050 and you won't see any removable lids for the HDD or RAM. Instead you'll need to remove the screws at the back cover, flip the laptop around, lift the screen, and then very carefully pry the stainless steel finish only to be greeted with dell's patented anti DIY alarm of plastic snapping sound. It's a very mac way to build a laptop. Don't get me wrong, I like apple products, especially the iPhone, but if I wanted a mac, I would have bought one, instead of getting a dell. IBM clones are suppose to be DIY friendly. This is one of the biggest regret in getting this laptop. Future upgrades will be troublesome. And this is the biggest disappointment of the N5050. All these while I've never bought any PCs online, though I do scout for prospective PCs the final purchasing decision will be a physical examination of the product at local resellers. I should've done the same with this purchase as well.

Another thing about having the 'latest and greatest' hardware like this dell with an intel i3 2330M with built in HD3000 graphic processor on the same die, is the lack of support by non mainstream OSes, namely linux. Sure, the latest kernel 3 is suppose to have better compatibility with sandy bridge, but it's how the desktop integrates itself with the kernel to give the best user experience which matters most. The old ubuntu 10.10 that I'm currently using on my compaq proves to be obsolete on the dell. And being a linux convert, I did what I can to not rely on windows.

In my hunt for the perfect linux for the N5050, I've installed Fedora 16 64, Linux Mint 12 RC 64, Xubuntu 11.10 (assumed to be 32bit). I've avoided Ubuntu because of Unity. There are many other distros, but I stick to those that required the least compiling. Don't even need to access the terminal, all the better.

I couldn't get fredora 16 to detect the wifi card. Mint 12 rc has trouble accessing my wifi unless I unhide the ssid. Xubuntu 11.10 doesn't have the same problems as the earlier two, and since its based on ubuntu (which I've been using for months now), its very easy to get the hang of it. But there's one minor set back. Boot and shutdown time. Xubuntu 11.10 shutdown much slower then the older ubuntu 10.10, and out of curiosity, I also tested Win 7 (64 bit) and realized that Win 7 not only boots faster (1 second faster then Xubuntu) but also shutdown faster as well. The test is done on freshly installed OSes with their drivers updated. No additional 3rd party software installed on Win 7 (firewall, anti virus, etc)

After editing the video and posting them into this blog only has I realized one variable that I did not take into account. load time from login screen to desktop. Win 7 took its time from the login screen to the desktop while Xubuntu 11.10 felt almost instantaneous. I would have done a second round of testing with auto login into desktop but then abandoned the plan when xubuntu 'excellent' battery management has drained the battery dry when I left a 60% charged laptop unattended for 6-7 hours. That was never an issue with win 7 as it went into hibernate and still has 40% charge (from 50%) after being left unattended for the whole day (about 8 hours). As a desktop OS, i'll opt for Xubuntu anytime, or may even try the lighter ldxe version. But for better battery management, better hardware optimization, win7 is the only way to go, for now.

Aging Ungracefully

My Neo has passed five, and signs of aging is starting to show, other then the badly faded paint. The engine is still running fine, it purrs while idling and whine when being pushed to the red line. Just like a brand new car.

The body however is a different story. Just this evening the rear passenger window almost dropped off as I accidentally knocked it form the inside while trying to fit a heavy duty trolley at the back seat. It's a good thing that it happened there and then. If it were to happen while I'm ferrying a passenger and he just so happens to rest his head on the glass, it could be fatal.

RM80 is what it cost to have the glass removed, and have the seal replaced. The foreman did warn beforehand that there is no guarantee that they won't accidentally break the glass while attempting to remove it as the adhesive on some part of the glass is still strong, and its that little bit of adhesive that prevents the glass from dropping off during the journey to the windscreen repair workshop.

The other side is starting to peel too.

Surprise Butt Seks

My car is a whore. Just slightly over a month since the previous accident, my car has been rear ended AGAIN! Should've seen it coming. In fact I did see the kenari from the rear view mirror gliding, barely slowing down for 50 meters before impact. At that point I was debating against myself should I just run the red light to save my car or stay put and do the right thing. Before I could chuck in the first gear, the traffic in font of me has decided for me by crossing my path.

This guy who used his car to rape mine was very apologetic and persisted that he will be compensate for damages done. He even handed me his IC without me asking for it. With his car picture taken, along with road tax, IC and his name card which has the same name with his IC, I took his word for it. I still has 24 hours to make a report, and I already got all the vital information.

The following day (today) just 5 hours before the end of the 24 hours window, I called him regarding my compensation and he requested to meet up later in the evening, which is totally unaccepted as it'll pass the 24 hour deadline to report a traffic accident, thus making me not eligible to claim insurance, regardless mine or his. After a lengthy telephone conversation of him with his promises to pay and me threatening of a police report at high noon, he finally gave in and set a venue at Shell Sunway Damansara. I was half expecting to be given the run around. And lo be hold, he arrived with cash in hand. He paid, we shook hands, and left.

He has indeed left an impression not just on my car, but me too. Someone responsible like him is a dying breed. And the best part of all, he wasn't angry, mad, or sulky. And also the part where he apologized first, instead of saying 'just a small matter only' like the other two chinese who damaged my car. Somehow I felt lucky meeting him, and rather unlucky for him that he had to meet me that way.

JMC No More

I've tendered my resignation in August but only officially resign in September. That's 12 months service with an earlier 2 months kepoh-ing their monthly meeting. Seeing that I quit, clearly the negative has out weight the perks from that role.

I wouldn't rant on the monthly meetings that drag on past midnight almost every single time. After all, that's part and parcel of being JMC. It wouldn't be half bad if we actually accomplish something from these late night gatherings, most of the time it feels like pissing into a sea of piss. In fact all the time it feels like that.

The biggest problem is there is no senior manager manning the site. Everything goes to the building executive which I think is an okay person when coming to handling small matters. However when coming to managing people and service providers, that's his main weakness. He's just too soft. Though I do hope that this will not be a permanent problem as only recently a new building manager was assigned to this place.

Then again, the JMC is partially to be blamed too. The JMC micromanages every single thing. Especially when coming to purchases. This will delay essential repairs as the management can't do anything until it gets majority vote. And this is also one of the main factor driving me away from the JMC role. It wouldn't have come to this if there was no breach of trust by the past manager as accused by the current JMC. If it was true, a police report would have been made and the managing company would be replaced. Instead they retain the company, and fire the manager. As a result, many prospective managers shy away form our apartment.

And seeing how management is being 'slow' certain projects were taken up by JMC which I too participated. The project that I was involved in was gym room upgrade, after completing a tedious hand holding-maintenance-work of keeping the parking lots well lit, which mainly consist of rewiring the entire lighting system to external wire trunking as we discovered that the internal wiring had shorted out.
The gym room upgrade was actually a project of another JMC who was pressured by her non JMC kaki to undertake as they use the gym room allot. Coincidentally this JMC was not well verse with gym equipment, nor even use any gym equipment. All I need to do was compare price in their quotations and giving a little feedback saying 'I had gym membership before' and viola, now it becomes my project.
Having total control over a certain project isn't really a bad thing either. Like the gym room upgrade which is essentially purchasing new equipment to replace old ones. The original gym equipment supplied by developers are nothing more then home use flimsy exercise machines. No surprise that it broke. So the original head project JMC sourced for quotations on gym equipment while I compared it with previous recommendations from previous manager (whom was fired). The price difference was huge for similar spec. After that, there's a round of visit to supplier facility to inspect the equipment intended for purchase. Just like how government purchasing officers does it, minus the under table money, big fulfilling dinner and free spa.
So, the gym was equipped with new toys, and spent less then the approved budget. Residents are once again happy, until someone broke the 2 week old upright bike. Fucking vandals.

The next project however is what convinced me that I should leave. The terms too many chef spoils the soup holds true in this case, the resident card system which has been a pet JMC project for 2 years prior me joining the committee. It would've been forgivable if the JMCs were bickering amongst themselves about which card system to adopt. I never knew there were so many types of proximity cards and sensors existed. What has been holding back the implementation was extremely trivial. How the card should look like! O_O
And it happened way too many time. When a design is put to vote, there will be comments on how to improve it. Some want detailed particulars like unit number, some don't. Some want an encoded code (something like the nirc number) to identify unit of resident, some don't and has even voted against it. Some like pink, others don't. And there was one time that I though they have finally finalized on a design when it got majority vote, only to have it cast back into the redesign,voting endless cycle when someone says 'hey, landscape mode looks better then portrait'

C714TU Hard Drive Replacement

After many weeks of procrastination, I finally bought a new 2.5" SATA hard drive to replace the ailing Hitachi 120G HDD that originally came with the C714TU. Procrastination was costly this time, literally. There was a price revise due to the flood in Thailand, and local computer dealers claim has affected supply of HDDs. RM170 for 320GB 2.5" SATA HDD, profiteering at its best.

Removing the HDD case
There are two screws that required to be loosen. They are marked with the HDD symbol, which is indicated with three OOO overlapping each other. Once completely loosen the cover should pop up a little to allow you to pick it up with your fingernail or a flat head screwdriver.

Once the cover is removed the HDD chassis is exposed. Pull the plastic tab to remove the HDD form the slot.

The HDD is secured onto a metal chassis which locks the HDD onto place. You need to remove this metal chassis and install it onto the new HDD. There are 2 screws on each side.

Installing the HDD back into the laptop, just reverse the steps. What was once pull is now push. What was once loosen in now tighten.

Simple eh?

Half a Pounder

McD's is at it again. First the triple cheese burger, which is rather meh. Now its the double quarter pounder. Nothing new as I'm getting my double quarter pounder fix(and sometimes triple quarter pounder) at Wendys. But since I'm a sucker for beef burgers, and had once sworn loyalty to McD (don't laugh, I know allot of people sworn loyalty to some brand, like mac fags and droid fags alike) I thought what the heck, after all it's been a really long time since I've visited the clown's restaurant. (30 days McD hiatus is a really long time)

Comparative to Wendys (which taste awesome), its dryer, which isn't surprising at all as Wendy's patties are cooked on the spot when order are placed unlike McD's which has its ingredients precooked and stored in little yellow-orange drawers. Since McD's have to deal with mini Somalia from 1200 to 1500, making fresh hot meals at the expense of the growing hungry and angry lunch crowd is out of the question. McD's also throw in a cheese Mcshaker for large meal, something that I avoided.

I saw a really good bargain the other day at Mid Valley. But I was rather reluctant to fork out that much for a premium netbook while compaq laptops cost about only half as much.
Then again, I don't really need another laptop. My current 15 incher is just right on my lap, but lugging around such a big hardware can be tedious when it comes to traveling. And because my laptop is suffering from multiple hardware failures, dead DVD drive, failing hard drive, battery which only last 1 hour, max, I'm very tempted to put down my laptop. Not to kill it though, but rather make it a desktop replacement and get a netbook for traveling needs. Not to mention that the netbook is advertised to last 5 hours on a single charge. That's 2 extra hours compared to my laptop when the battery is still brand new.

And, the netbook is made from aluminum, you've probably guessed what it is from the poorly masked picture.

To buy or not to buy, that is the question.

Previously I'd turn the adult content filter option on in the blog settings. However having to click on the "I understand and wish to continue" button every single time I want to post a new entry in my blog is way too tedious. Furthermore how effective is it anyway? What I remembered him most is how he killed the floppy drive by not having any floppy disc drive in iMacs. It took the world by surprise as back then we are still pretty attached to that magnetic sensitive and fungus prone storage media. Who would've thought to make CDs bootable? I still remembered the steps needed to install windows in a new computer back then.

Unifi VS Astro B.yond IPTV

Recently Astro has been promoting its B.yond IPTV service, powered by Time Dot Com. At first I wasn't bothered much as I'm not a TV person and almost all the media that I watched came form the internet, weather it's youtube, downloaded HD movies or failblog. Today, the apartment office received a proposal letter from Astro to bring it's B.yond IPTV service to the residents. I most welcome this move as there's already a small demand for B.yond form the residents which they are being deprived of at the moment as the common satellite dish is not compatible with B.yond and upgrading it will cost the management a fortune, AND not to mention that other existing apartments who are using the upgraded service from subcontractors are not satisfied with service rendered. This B.yond IPTV service offered directly from Astro/Time which is a savior. If JMC approves it that is.

First Looks
Anyways, in a nutshell, from my point of view, Unifi and B.yond IPTV is basically the same thing, they are both apples, but marketed in a different way. Unifi sells high speed broadband (HSBB) as its main course and the IPTV, VOD, voice line as value added service. B.yond IPTV markets its IPTV first. Either way you get both the same thing weather Unifi or B.yond IPTV with an additional extra from Astro is the PVR recorder.

Installation
Installation however is quite different, and also the main point of this blogpost. Observe the installation method of Time HSBB from the image below. Do take note that I'm talking about installation of HSBB in a high rise residence (apartment/condo) I'm not sure if this encompass flats.

Article 1.5.1 states that a two core fiber optic cable will be truncated into the subscriber's unit. Compare that to Unifi which fiber optic cable ends at the MDF rizer (image below).

Meaning to say that if you are a Unifi customer at your high rise home, you'll be sharing your fiber optic connection with other units via copper line. For a B.yond IPTV that comes with Time Dot Com HSBB customer, you get the fiber optic cable direct into your home, no sharing with your neighbors.

Think of it this way:
Astro B.yond IPTV (powered by time HSBB) = highway straight into your house.
Unifi = highway ends at residential area, shared common narrow road with neighbors

They say that sharing is caring, but not when coming to bandwidth, it's everyone for themselves.

It's clear who's the obvious winner here.

Price/Value

packages offered by B.yond IPTV
I've merged the offered HSBB packages by both providers for easier comprehension. The cheapest HSBB is offered by time which is just Rm128/month for a 3Mbps line.

But I'm not going to look into this, rather focus on TF6, which is the closest competition to Unifi's 5Mbps line. Firstly TF6 is RM1/month cheaper then Unifi VIP 5 and also 1Mbps faster. Then there's the bonus of speed boost that boost your internet speed to 10Mbps for 30 hours, which means for 30 hours your connection will be as fast as Unifi VIP10 package (as claimed by Time Dot Com). Even if we ignore the speed boost bonus, TF6 has the best value.
The other packages are priced accordingly to their offered speed.

Unfortunately I've signed up a 2 year contract with Unifi.

Some weeks ago (yes, i'm aging) I can't remember exactly which Sunday, sweetheart made green bean soup. Part of the preparation was soaking the beans in water and then washing them in running water. I've noticed some beans in the sink trap but ignored it as I told myself "beans won't rot". And they didn't. Instead they germinate. What's odd though was within those days, I didn't notice the sprouts growing in the sink.

Why, oh, Facebook, Why do you have to change the way we look at our home screen? All top stories are not 'top' at all. Sure the motoring journo posted pictures of cars that I can't afford and there's over 50 comments on it, but I don't find it top. But I do find it amusing that a buddy's post on facebook new home look being rated as top, that's something I'll let slide. On the plus side though is the constantly updated activities on the top right, or like my friend will call it, stalker's update.

Normally whenever anyone post a comment, it will not be shown immediately on the wall, but rather summarized and buried along with other status updates and minor activities. This time I get live feed of friends adding friends, and liking photos of people I don't know. This stalker update is obviously good for stalkers, catching their prey in the act. Good for bosses to keep watch of their employee's activities. Not good for the people being stalked. Personally I'm torn between liking it and disliking it. I don't mind having the ability to stalk people, but definitely not being stalked.

Even with the negative feedback, Facebook being Facebook will not cave in to these small protest. If you've been on Facebook long enough you'll know that whenever there's a change, it's there to stay. Facebook is the only entity that I can think of that does what it likes and the users are forced to swallow it whole, even if it's turd.

Living on the 17th Floor

It's been twelve weeks, add minus a day or two since I've moved in. The first thing that I realized is how I've took house keeping for granted. A sparkling clean floor no longer awaits me when I get back home. If I leave it for a week, dust bunnies will appear from under the TV shelf. The house gets dusty, fast. On the bright side, since it's less then a thousand square feet, cleaning isn't much a chore. Vacuum and mopped the place in an hour tops. Doing my own house chore does teach me a few things, like not all off the shelf cleaning detergent is the same. The first floor cleaner I used was Dettol, which I believe having antiseptic floor cleaner was a good enough to kill germs and keep the floor clean. It did feel clean immediately, but after two days, it felt sticky again. Then I tried some unheard of floor cleaner which the hardware shop that I frequent has on sale. It worked wonders, a week since the first use and the floor doesn't feel sticky. There is a catch however. This floor cleaner has wax which eliminates the sticky feel, however it doesn't have special dust repellent of any hocuspocus to keep the floor clean for a week. Dust still settles, and the regular once every two days housework remains.

The other immediate realization living in a high density high rise is the smell. I got to smell what my neighbor cooks. Every weekend some neighbor at the lower floor will boil herbal soup. Almost every night there will be smell of fried fish, a smell that I cannot forget as it's imprinted during my childhood years having the Filipino maid frying ikan kembong for lunch 2-3 times weekly. I grew sick of it then, but crave for it now. And then there's the smell of cigarettes from 2-3 floors directly below who always puffs at the balcony which I always leave open. So, an advice to those of you who think of living in a high rise and are sensitive to smell, get a unit installed with climate control and be prepared to spend a bomb on electricity.

There are some perks though. Firstly, being on the highest floor, I will never have to experience heavy stomping. Also, there's no plumbing on the ceiling. Double plus, don't have to hear the unit above flush the toilet, especially in the wee hours of morning. And in the event of any leaks from the ceiling, it's borne by management. Getting unit owners to pay for repairs which doesn't directly affects them can be a bitch sometimes, knowing malaysian attitude. Dealing with management is somewhat less of a pain.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

It's been a while since I last blogged about my ride. In fact there's nothing much to blog about it as it's been in a state of neglect for many many months. The paint job is in a state of despair, no thanks to the workshop that work on my neo during the October 08 accident. And there's a roach infestation inside the car. Other then that, I've removed the poser gauges as it's utterly useless daytime. I had the back light on during ignition, meaning the back light is on whenever the key is in the ignition and yet I still can't read the gauges. Whoever had the great idea of having smoked lens on black face gauges. And no one is smart enough to make black face gauges with clear lens other then Omori that's demanding for your first born for one measly 52mm gauge. On the bright side, it's a full electronic gauge with 7 color EL back light.

Lately it's at the workshop again, this time it's at my regular mechanic for tire change. I can't remember how long I kept the front sets and it's badly worn on the passenger side but still has enough thread left on the driver side. Probably I'm not making enough left turns. And I've also forgotten how brand new tires felt. Regardless the sissy camber settings (my neo now is no longer as nippy as I first drove it out the showroom) the ride feels more planted during corners. Over time, I've changed driving style to suit the less-traction-worn-out-tires. Actually I drove the neo like how I'd drive a savvy or viva, be leaving lots of room for under steer slide on the exits, and braking early putting more weight to the front tires on entry for better traction. Also, keeping a safe distance from the car in front. Now, with new tires, I can be reckless again.

Or maybe not. This is my 4th set of dampers and its dying. Or it's rather dead by this evening as the knocking got severe. And the best part is, this set of dampers has never seen any track or touge activity, well maybe a mini touge at Tropicana, but not a full uphill-downhill Bukit Tinggi. I'm not going to fork out another RM600 to have it die again 6 or 12 months later. And kayaba is now in my shit list of shitty products. I've thought of getting the entire suspension reworked with full adjustables including the pillowball mount. But I like the current ride height, and the spring rate of the R3 springs is just right. I'll probably get an original replacement from Proton, but first I'll need the part number.

Last but not least had a fender bender on the start of work. Picture related, since a police report is made with no incidents, I'll save the public humility and leave out the details. All I can say is, she bangs.

Brace for Impact!

Way back in June I've discovered a huge chunk of bad sectors in my laptop hard drive. ‎2752814 bad sectors. This morning it has 2883899 bad sectors.

yesterday I checked the WD MyBook and found it to contain 190 bad sectors.

This comes as no surprise as I normally unplug the power cord to the laptop whenever the OS freezes up and does not respond to any kind of inputs, be it windows or linux (yes, lunux crashes too). And it also could be due to these bad sectors that the OS load times has increased significantly.

Cheapest option would be a direct HDD swap, about less then RM170 for a 500GB notebook drive. On the other hand, I'm also keen to try SSD however the cheapest SSD is within the range of Rm500 for a 64GB drive. I'm okay with the size as my current linux partition is just 30GB and that's already plenty, provided I don't store the entire Top Gear seasons in it. Speaking of SSD, I've noticed that new netbooks are no longer equipped with SSD and reverted back to traditional platter spinning HDD. No demand perhaps.

Oh well, time to backup the laptop before it fails to book completely.

Last year I had a debate with my sister regarding which is the most efficient way of storing movies (.avi .mkv and what's not) She proposed the alphabetical system where folders are set for movies within a certain alphabet range. I opt for the year-movie-is-released system, requires less folders initially, but grows in time. There is one disadvantage, I've to remember how old was the movie.

As of late I had this nostalgia syndrome, whatever you call it. I wanted to watch the first Fast and Furious, and could not remember the year it was released. Sure I can use the search button as the magnifying glass icon sits there in the upper right taskbar is well within reach, however, being a seasoned XP user, I never use the search until I've gone through all the folders that I think where the file is kept but still can't find it. I've got to tell myself that searching in linux is much faster then XP was.

Wai Leng, you are right, alphabetical is easier. But I'm lazy to reorganize my movie folders, so I went searching for movie managers/organizers. The first place I looked is no other then Ubuntu Software center.

I'm not sure if this app is from the default repositories or from the many others that I've added for other apps, none the less the author does little to hide its true intention. I was going to blame it on Top Gear, but the season ended 2 weeks ago. If you know me, when I'm hooked onto a TV show, everything else is chucked one side. Even if the fire alarm ring I'll continue watching. Then again, it's all an excuse. Truth to be told, I'm lazy.

There are many draft post saved which has yet to be published. Mainly because most of which are of pathetic quality and twitter-standard-short. They are checked in cold storage until I find inspiration to finish it, which of course will never happen and I'll probably abort it with the delete button.

Friendster Blog is Now Gone

When I deleted my friendster account some time ago, the blog was still up, probably its treated as a separate entity from the user account as the blog is wordpress, nothing changed from the original. So when friendster announced that they are purging its user database in May, I barely gave too hoots.

Technological Wonder

About a month ago, my aging laptop got all cranky upon shutting down which requires me to pull the plug. At first I thought it was just a buggy Ubuntu. But that problem also persist on my other linux OS which i used for 'wireless network survey'. And soon, a minor shut down bug manifest into RTL(something) driver problems in BOTH OSes which is in two different partition using two different journaling file systems. I then ran fsck on the entire drive and discovered bad sectors, oddly enough these bad sectors lie on the RTL drivers on two separate linux partitions. Coincidence?
Safe to say, I can't use my Alpha wireless adapter in both linux, even after fsck. And being a Windows user for about 20 years has thought me the one size fits all solution: partition, format, clean install. The only problem is, my hard drive is dying and that solution won't help. So, I procrastinated in getting a replacement hard drive, debating with myself over which hard drive to get, a 500G SATA drive, or 350G portable USB drive where I can swap the drives and use the old drive as backup or movie storage.

After some time, all these was forgotten and I plugged in the Alpha out of habit for my nightly 'wireless survey' and unexpectedly, it worked! In fact I've forgotten about the problem until my wife said "I thought that you said something's wrong with your wifi". Only then did I remember about the bad sectors. Oddly enough, both linux manage to fix itself.

On the side note, ever since I've adopted Ubuntu as main OS, I find Win7 more complicated to use. The only thing that I liked about Win7 is the ease of networking computers together for file sharing. That's the only easy part. But while trying to set a different DNS server, I was lost in the maze of revamped network settings interface. Its easier to change DNS in Ubuntu, and XP compared to Win7.

Bersih 2.0

Bersih 2.0 came and went and what I remembered most was the bullying attitude of the police force (read: BN dogs) which started since Thursday with preemptive arrest and their infamous fear and hate mongering road blocks. Yes, road blocks irritating and getting stuck in a jam is very FRUSTRATING, thanks to the PDRM, what normally takes 30-40 minutes to get home in rush hour traffic, prolonged it to 1.5 hours, probably more, and on top of that, the road block wasn't on the road that I'm using. The jam was caused by spill overs of stagnant traffic from the blocked roads. Whoever that got stuck along the blocked roads, you guys know who to vote for in the next election. It's no surprise that the mainstream media highlighted frustrated drivers and traders who were affected and blaming the rally for everything instead of the police that locked down the entire city, instead of isolating a few streets for a few hours for the march like how night markets were done. And by doing so only reinforces the support for Bersih and ultimately Pakatan Rakyat which is the only choice other then BN. The lesser of two evils.

PR isn't that clean either. Remember the three frogs that hopped to become BN friendly independent? IF PR is clean, they will stay regardless how big the carrot dangling on the other side. Then again it's very easy to blame BN for 'buying' over their agents. But then, if there's no buyer, there won't be any suppliers.

One thing that still boggles my mind though. His Royal Highness intervened to diffuse the tension between Bersih and the government by asking them to call off their rallies. Ambiga Sreenevasan, the chief of Bersih 2.0 has met with the Duli yang Maha Mulia Seri Paduka Baginda yang dipertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan days prior the rally. Why didn't she hand over the memorandum there and then when she was in the same room with His Royal Highness?? Here she says "with respect to His Royal Highness, we won't hold street demo" then days later, BOOM! the streets are flooded with sea of people making way to a closed stadium guarded by riot police and chemical troopers. Things would have played out differently had she delivered the memorandum AND canceled the rally. Personally I think it's a sign of disrespect to His Royal Highness.

The whole setup. From left Internet TV, high speed modem, rebranded router with reskinned interface which I'm still unable to change the router password, VIOP cordless phone and TV remotes.

Wires, wires everywhere. I won't be doing any wire management until I get a better TV hung on the wall. And I'll also need extensions for the xbox and PS2 (yeah, i'm still keeping it for Metal Slug).

Looking back on the installation, with a much calmer mind now, I've really got to salute the trio of Unifi technicians (2 technicians work at the rizer, the other one setup the toys in the living room). Yes, they pissed me off with their poor sense of direction which made them 2 hours late for the installation. If I were in their situation, I'll just tell the customer "it's late, I'll come back tomorrow". Instead, they pushed through to see the installation gets done that day. Depending on how you look at it, some people don't like having strangers at their house 10 at night fiddling with their telephone cables. I on the other hand much welcome that gesture as living without internet access at home is a huge inconvenience, especially when coming to bill payments as I do all my bill payments online.

The heating element is actually fiery red. Since the camera of the G400 doesn't comes with IR filter, hence the discoloration.

There are hybrid Hi-lite ceramic tops with conventional gas stoves in the market, but after one bad review on an Elba all-in-one, I've decided to separate them both so I have better control over how far apart to place the stoves so that the heat from the gas stove doesn't melt the sensitive circuitry of the Hi-lite ceramic stove. Took them a week to call me after my case was appointed to someone. No surprise, this is Malaysia, the land of pathetic customer service. Even Maxis service center sucks balls. I just got billed 25 bucks for a phone line that I disconnected weeks ago.

So I finally moved in. After 18 months of DIY home improvement, I finally got the professionals to finish the job, namely the kitchen, window panels, replacing water faucets (which required wall hacking and patch up work), and floor tiling.
Also it was a coincidence that I met with the property agent who sold me the unit. Not to my surprise that he, asked if I'm ever going to move in as he noticed my unit being vacant for more then a year. He thought that I was buying it for investment, which according to him, my unit is worth at least 250k. That's a big jump of 60k in 18 months, compared to the original buyer who only profited 30k in 4-5 years. That's a good profit margin, but then again, so is every piece of property around PJ which saw similar price hike.

I've also subscribed to Unifi.

But the technician didn't come to install even after confirming the appointment :(

Walking Dead

This comic series has gotten me busy for the entire week. I've finished 83 issues and downloading the 84th right now. I can't remember when was the last time I had the same kanchiong-ness feeling, waiting for the next episode, to find out what happens next. The other zombie apocalypse I've read was Crossed, which I still thinks is more believe able then flesh-eating-animated-corpses. But it is walking dead that got me so hooked, so concerned on the well being of Rick and his small group of survivors. What I like best is how the character evolves from your ordinary law abiding citizen to an almost barbaric character in a state of lawlessness in the land of living dead.

But then again, it's unfair to compare it to Crossed as the later only comes in short mini series, about 7 volumes max, so there's little time for character development without making it look like the character is having split personality issues. Speaking of lawlessness, the recent earthquake + tsunami + nuclear crisis in Fukushima has made me thinking how different it will be if the same zombie apocalypse were to hit Japan. Whatever happened in New Orleans did not happen in Fukushima. So, if a zombie apocalypse were to happen in Japan things could still be in order. I would've taken Resident Evil as example, but its rather boring as it only focus on one player only, and there's very little interaction and relationship building as Walking Dead.

And then the assassination of Osama Bin Laden, the most wanted terrorist. The later has clearly overshadowed the royal wedding as there's no more news on the newly titled Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Osama Bin Laden, the man FBI hold responsible for the 9/11 terrorist attack. The man that ignited two wars which drained the US economy. The man that instigated widespread islamophobia through out the world. The man that caused major inconvenience for air travelers by subjecting them to xray pornography and child molestation. About a month ago I've formatted the entire hard drive of my laptop (C714TU) (yes, again) because I've messed up with the boot loader and messed up several partitions by installing backtrack. And since then, I've left everything vanilla for both the linux and windows. I've tried to make the XP to mimic snow leopard but rocket dock made everything runs so slow (yeah its an old laptop) before the boot loader accident. Only ubuntu manage to run smoothly with the OSX plastic surgery. But then again, vanilla is a good flavour too. So, until I get bored looking at the old ubuntu interface I'll might give this a try.

Najib surely thinks that we still live on trees and Malaysians are idiots. True on the last part, I mean cmon, look at the idiots that's running this democratic country, they were voted up there by the people.

Its drawing lots of flack because even idiots like us knows that its waaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy overpriced. The basic web + email hosting service that cost about rm500 a year that I subscribe to already provides unlimited email with unlimited space and bandwidth. For Rm50 million, that can last 100 000 years, and I'm sure there's bulk discount for a lifetime hosting. (this RM500/year is the shittiest service money can buy, probably double that amount for decent software and customer support)

That's just one company I subscribe to, there are dozens more companies in Malaysia that provides similar services, and when an open tender is issued allowing free for all competition, price can be lower that what I'm paying for.

Strike 2 is when he said it's not compulsory. Why spend so much for something that's totally voluntary? It's like saying: we are building an Olympic size swimming pool out of gold for RM50 million with YOUR tax money and it free for everyone to use. If you don't like it, you are free not to swim in it.

Furthermore I've filled my gmail address in countless government forms and have yet to receive a single email from them.

I still get my assessment rate reminder through snail mail
I've never been contacted by the national registration department through any communication means
I've to go online too check if I've accumulated any traffic summonses (also means NONE bothered to tell me I've outstanding speeding ticket since 2006)

And they are telling me that with RM50 million they can fix all those?

PETALING JAYA: Participants of a night marathon held at the Sepang International Circuit are dissatisfied over what they claim was poor organisation.
Andreas West, a participant of the Energizer Night Race 2011, claimed that thousands were cramped in an underground tunnel that connected the SIC pit area to the mall area because race organiser Expose Media had set up counters for participants to collect their headlamps there.
The German expatriate, who started a Facebook page on the incident, said there were “serious health and security risks” unattended to throughout the event.
“While I am thankful that nothing tragic had happened, I share the sentiments of many participants of the marathon who have said that this was a very badly organised event,” said West, who is also Celcom Bhd's customer management senior vice-president, yesterday.
The event had taken place on Saturday night.
Many race finishers said they did not receive their finisher medals and certificates.
Participants also claimed that there was a lack of signages, water stops, medical personnel and race marshals.
They are now demanding that they be compensated.
Participants had to fork out RM55 for early birds or RM75 to join the marathon.
Marketing communications manager Ashley Khoo, 32, who ran the 21km leg of the marathon said due recognition should be given to runners who had completed their run.
“Many of us went home without a finisher medal.
“We had been practising for months to prepare ourselves to be fit for the race,” she said.
It is understood that the event's main sponsor Energizer will meet Expose Media to discuss further action to be taken.
“We appreciate the comments on the race. All finishing goodie bags will be given out and an official statement from Expose and Energizer will be out soon,” an announcement on the event website said.
Expose Media also offered their apologies to all the runners on its Facebook page, saying that the outcome of the meeting would be announced today.

The news report is very mellow compared to the fire that's burning on the other side of the internet, especially those who experienced the blotched up marathon first hand. (I don't know this dude, I just like the way he document the event). Lucky there's no fatalities like the previous marathon. But I do think that the organizers can be sued for attempting murder with the 'tunnel of death' by forcing an insane amount of traffic into a narrow, poorly ventilated tunnel. And since its the era of social networking, its no surprise boycott pages (HERE and HERE)sprung up within hours of the incident.

App Blocker Plus

If there is one Facebook app that I'll ever want to use now, is App Blocker (if it ever exist). I wonder who gave the smart idea of allowing apps taking control of the user's wall by spamming every fight won in Mafia Wars or that one ingredient needed to complete a level 3 recipe in Restaurant City and not to mention the constant begging of getting help on their farms in Farmvile. These are just the small annoyance which is easily solved with the 'block app' option. And yes, I've blocked TONS of apps. Though there was no counter to keep track how many apps I've blocked in total, but i had to press the 'page down' button fifteen times from the start of the first blocked apps to reach the bottom of the page. And to top that off, I sometimes preemptive strike on the apps by visiting friends page who are app-a-holic and start blocking app post on their wall, so that it won't show in my feed in the event some friend decide to use that app in the future. I'm a real Nazi when coming to what gets posted on walls and news feed.

Then again this could be a sign of OCD. Strangely enough only on selected stuff like Facebook, and also I've this habit of constantly checking the car is locked at almost every traffic light and stop sign.

However, of late picture tagging apps are starting to manifest Facebook, As if photo-tagging-marketing isn't enough, there are now apps that tags random friends in "who viewed my profile" or "who likes me" or "what your name means" and many many other I-don't-give-a-fuck app. Unfortunately I've yet to find a way to overcome this mess. Blocking the app only work for the user, if that person is tagged by a friend of a friend its ineffective.

Also, I've tested the newly added unfriend function in Facebook for iPhone app. It worked.

Got a good number on the odometer the other day. Normally I won't notice the odometer until the thought of servicing the car crept up my mind, which usually 2000 to 3000 km overdue. And the trip meter is at 71.7km just 6km short to hit the magic 77.7 mark. If i've just reset the trip meter 6km earlier then i'll be getting helluva lots of 7s on the odometer. Getting 7 7s out of 8 is not too bad either.

If you've been using an iphone long enough, you'll know that there are two types of free apps in the app store. Trial (lite apps) and adware (free apps). Lite apps are trial version with limited functionality. In terms of gaming, only a few levels are included and the rest have to be bought. Free apps however are full function apps which are given free, with a big catch. Advertisements.

There are some advertisement orientated apps which is easily 'bypassed' by switching onto airplane mode so the advertisement will not be downloaded. Its an issue especially for iphone users who don't have affordable data plans. And also useful to get rid of the eyesore of flashy advertisement. The best example I had in my iphone is sudoku, where the adds at the bottom are downloaded when there's internet connection. The game data is stored naively in the phone, so you can still play the game without internet connection. Of course this trick only works on single player games only.

However apps that require internet connection to get updated data like news apps, (BBC and engadget) and also multiplayer games like charadium seems to have the upper hand in advertisement harassment. Especially charadium. Whenever there's a recess between game, a full screen add will appear. What seems like a small annoyance at first can turn into a full blown rage fest when typing out the answer halfway only having the screen change to an advertisement because someone else was quicker on the answer. Like playing slap hands. The small embarrassment is funny at first, but then your face will turn as red as your hands after several consecutive losses. I bought charadium 3 days after trying the addware which I soon regret. A week into the paid game, I soon find myself in room filled with trolls. Picture speaks a thousand words.

At $2.99, it's kinda steep compared to other games like Angry Birds and Bad Company 2. And the best part of Bad Company 2 is there's no chat ability, so you won't get to hear swears from squeaky voiced preteens like over X box live, or screen full of NOOB and FUCK! chat message obstructing the view. The lousy thing about Bad Company 2 is poor multiplayer connectivity which resulted in dropped connections and kills score not registering. There are times where my kills are not updated in the scoreboard though I've fragged many players. But, since it actually prolongs game time and I'm not getting pwned, I'm ok with it.

So the iPad 2 is revealed. 30% thinner, 15% lighter, 2 times faster while boasting that it still maintains the same battery life of 10 hours. In fact, the trend of smaller, more powerful gadgets shows no signs of slowing down. But one thing that still boggles my mind is why didn't they double the battery capacity to make the device last longer?

Firstly, I not an anorexic super model, so I don't need super thin, super light phones. I'm perfectly fine with the 12.3mm thick iPhone3Gs. So, instead of making the iPhone4 9.3mm thin, why can't they just retain the 12.3mm size and add more batteries in it? Same goes for the iPad2. I don't need 33% thinner. I'll be happy if it can last 33% longer. Gone were the days where you charge ol faithful nokia 3310 once a week, or once every 3 days for those snake sessions waiting for the bus, on the bus, on the loo, while watching tv, while having breakfast, during recess and even during lectures.

Also, back then I can balik kampung for days without having to bring the phone charger along as long as its fully charged before the trip. Nowadays the first thing that i pack in the luggage is the phone charger.

In the day of modern computing when hardware accelerated graphics is a standard, one would hardly find any pixelated graphics other then retro classics on the iphone, and of course, mosaic in japanese porn.

There is one game that caught on regardless its heavily pixelated look. A game where substance matters more then style. Or probably its intentionally designed that way to give it some nostalgic feel to it. The game is minecraft.

In a nutshell, Minecraft is Lego in first person mode with a twist on adventure and survival.

You can build your own house

You can grow your own crops

Or hunt

Mine for minerals (hence the name minecraft)

Explore pre generated natural wonders

Or make your own wonder, like an underwater tunnel system

One other thing that I like about Minecraft is it teaches the player about sustainable development. There is no in game tutorial like those education software. But rather makes the player to think for himself what to do when there's no trees left. Wood is an important natural resource in the game as it has many applications like construction material (which is easily replaceable with rocks), fuel, used as torches (which is very important in preventing monsters from spawning at that location) and used in tools which will degrade after several uses. Though trees are abundant at first it will run out due to uncontrolled logging. Therefore the player has to plant new trees from saplings harvested from matured trees, unless he doesn't mind traveling to different locations every time a forest is cleared out.

And, like Lego, it's all about creativity. There are tones of minecraft videos on youtube about traps, farms, and even awesome project like this starship enterprise.

Driving Like an Old man

The first I drove like an old man was when I over estimated the amount of fuel left in the tank before departing. And I was forced to cruise at 90km/h at the left most lane when the fuel level needle was at its last bar and I was only half way through the journey. I even exited two stops earlier into Sungai Buloh to fuel up at Shell, when I've already been driving with the low fuel warning since Tanjung Malim.

This time however was purely for safety reasons.

The last time I went gong ho in the dark was years ago, when my Neo was less then a year old, on the way back from Putrajaya via the NKVE which is pretty well lit. And my night vision was better. But since the Neo was stock, I only managed 170km/h.

Years passed and my night vision is not what it used to be. Furthermore there are no street lights for most part of the North South Highway. And it rained earlier that evening, so I was expecting wet roads which fortunately has already dried up. Furthermore this is the first week feeding my Neo with Ron95 after being on a strict Ron97 diet for the first 5 years of its life.

This is the second time I drove like an old man. Details as follows:

Chinese New Year has come and gone with little attention paid to it in this blog. It should have been a spectacular post, or at least a picture or video of lo sang like previous years.

This CNY was most different then the previous years. We had planned for a trip to Melaka, this time to a service apartment with good housekeeping and crystal clear water form the tap (I've stayed at this apartment on the previous trip with Sweetheart, Carmen and my buddies. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, we decided to cancel the trip and spend the rest of CNY at home with lunch visits to near by relatives that isn't an hour away.

It is a blessing though that this CNY is different. Usually CNY will be eat, watch TV, gossip, catching up with gossips with relatives and then eat some more until I add an inch to the waist line. But, since I'm home, and many thanks to Sweetheart's Christmas present, I had plenty of exercise on Kinect Adventure. So, my weight maintained after several sessions on the reflex ridge and rally ball.

On top of that, I've finally watched the movies what i've always wanted to watch but didn't had the time to, like inglorious basterds, takers and red.

Survive a New Year

Also, I've just returned from the very first committee meeting for 2011. It is also the first time I meet up with the new security company management team which has been in operation for the past two months. And there's the same old rant-machine, our very own version of LKS. However, there's one major thing that differentiate him from the real thing. The real LKS has balls to confront people whom he thinks he should be speaking to directly, unlike ours, so not to tarnish LKS good name, I'll just have to refer our own LKS as MrH. And that's what exactly happened yesterday.

MrH was ranting to (like always) about how inefficient the security guard is. I've told him that they are only 2 months new, and he doesn't accepts that excuse, which i totally agree with him since the matter that he's pointing out is the piss poor communication skill these foreign guards, it took more then 3 hours and 3 reminders to get a suspicious van clammed. Later it turns out that the van was a stolen vehicle. I tired to probe more into the stolen vehicle part but MrH has no further detail about it and continue with his rant on the guards. My attempt to switch subjects was futile over this enthusiasm to rant.

Then, by chance I saw the security team managers at the corridor and thought to myself "great timing to get rid of MrH off my back" and also, what better way to channel the news directly to the source. Cut out the middle man (me). And that's when MrH pulls out an RPK (Raja Petra), "no, i'm not meeting them unless I got an invitation". WTF!?!? It's a common area for crying out loud, I'm not asking MrH to sit through our monthly meeting which will be minuted. Just a small talk at a common area, nothing formal, besides wasn't my suggestion to "lets go over there and have a chat with them" an invitation?

2 Weeks without Windows

Although I'm running dual boot WinXP SP2 and Ubuntu 10.10 on a freshly formatted and partitioned hard drive, I've yet to log into WinXP for the first time. I've copied the driver installation over into the XP partition through Ubuntu, somehow I never got around to prep the Winxp. In fact I'm quite comfortable with Ubuntu in just 2 weeks.

So, where has Ubuntu done right?

If I tell this to the 17year old version of me I'd definitely laugh at myself. Macs are for fags will definitely be the first thing out of my mouth. And then I'd probably go on and on about no games for linux. True about the game part. Though the game library has grown many folds compared to the first time I experimented with linux, it still lacks support form main stream best sellers. This is something that I can live without, not the 17year old me. The fact that I no longer game is the big contributing factor how I accustomed to ubuntu so quickly.

To Know Your Country Better, Be a Tour Guide.

Over the past months I've been playing tour guide to Carmen, sweetheart's supervisor from the USA. Generally, being Malaysians the first thing that we can think of is shopping. What better way to stimulate our local economy to have foreigners to spend here, right? But then again, why come to Malaysia just to shop? There are other things that define this country then the over abundance of shopping malls and street peddlers.

The first place I can think of is non other then Batu Caves, one of the oldest Hindu place of worship made famous by its 272 steps up a limestone cave and the statue of Lord Murugan. And that's when the questions starts pouring out, what statue is that? how tall is it? is it made of real gold? how many steps are there? what's up there(in the cave)? how old is this place? And that's also when I realized how little I know about that place other then being the perfect place to exercise your hamstrings. Thank Jobs for the Iphone and a full bar 3G signal so I can quickly wiki all those information midway up the steps.

And also thanks to our diverse culture, we were never short of place to visit. Like the Ramadan bazaar at Shah Alam Stadium for coming up first in Google search. Speaking of Ramadan, she is a Muslim convert and is very enthusiastic about the religion and culture. This made my job easier as I was able to bring her to the Shah Alam Blue mosque. Having a Caucasian around is like having one of those multipass. I was given the one eyebrow lifted look when entering the gigantous blue mosque trying to find my way around, but when she caught up with me, the eyebrows turn to warm smiles.
Our visit to the National Mosque in down town KL was MUCH friendlier, probably because they got a steady stream of tourist daily, as compared to the Blue Mosque. And I didn't know that within the compound of the National Mosque is the resting place of 'our' forefathers.

And soon enough, I found myself start doing tourist stuff, like planning a trip to Melaca and visiting tourist hot spots, something which I've avoided all these while as I didn't want to get suckered into these tourist traps as the price of souvenirs and even refreshments are overpriced. Nevertheless, doing tourist stuff at tourist locations is fun, especially meeting other tourist and exchanging greetings.

I've got to admit that without Carmen, I wouldn't bother about sight seeing, or taking road trips to far away places I've never visited. However, going with a bunch of friends does makes things allot better. Theres better company, more people to help make decisions, and also we can order more dishes to sample, something a couple can't do without having those food go to waste.

The Russians Does it Better

In a nutshell, Newsmakers is a remake of 2004 Hong Kong Movie Breaking News. It has the same plot, the same story line, same action scenes. The only main difference is, I enjoyed Newsmakers very much.

Here's what sets Newsmakers apart from Breaking News

1) Russians KNOWS how to act.
All character has their own personality and the actors portrayed it very well. This is my first Russian movie, so I don't know if i'm looking at bing time hotshots, or some really talented armatures. Most noticeable difference is how the Russian Mariya Mashkova outshines the cocked eye logo block Kelly Chen in the same role. Though there are times that I feel Mariya a bit over enthusiastic when she boss people around the command center, but at least she shows emotions, scared, excited, angry which is a farcry over the Chinese female Steven Seagal.

2) Russians are more badass.
Probably the way each actors has their own characters, even the baddies. There's this psychopathic crack head with an obsession to record everything with his cellphone which really caught my attention and adds flavor into the movie. Then theres the cool as a cucumber mastermind which is just a carbon copy of the Hong Kong version, nothing to shout about.

3) Better fireworks.
It doesn't look like cheap CGI and they are very generous with bullets, especially for a gang that robs armored trucks. Their arsenal rivals those of a small army, grenades, rpgs, and AK47 with infinite ammo.

4) Breaking News video conferencing is Windows Media Player
At first I loled, then I was put off by it.
Newsmakers uses some interface that i'm not familiar with, so i gave them the benefit of doubt. There's one thing that bugs me though, newsmakers didn't use webcam but cellphone camera.

I'm definitely rewatching Newsmakers again.

A Week with Ubuntu 10.10

So, I'm finally getting the hang of it, after installing Ubuntu for the 3rd time within the span of 24 hours.
On the first installation, I messed up the desktop by copy-pasting some code in the internet that supposedly enables glscreen saver as desktop. I've already downloaded the matrix code screensaver so all I need to do was to make it run. Unfortunately it didn't work. All I got was a blank black screen as desktop, the icons are gone and I can no longer right click on desktop to change properties. Sure, the appearance option is in the system tab, but that is many clicks away, furthermore I'm rather accustomed with the convenience of right click desktop function. Since there's no system restore and I don't know how to undo whatever commands I fed into the terminal, the easiest solution was to reinstall Ubuntu.

The one thing about windows which I've never appreciated until now is the system restore and the OS repair feature when booting with an XP CD. Now I've realized how important and convenient those features are. I've always disabled system restore on XP to gain that few gigs of hard disk space, and also because I'm very sure what I was doing, so the OS rarely screw up unless I eff it up big time. Now I wish my Ubuntu has those features so I can experiment with the terminal without fear of having to reinstall all over again. One click on restore point return things back to normal.

I short-cut around the second installation by installing over the existing ext4 partition and in the end I got 2 separate linux in the same hdd. And to make matter worse, it only boot into terminal mode only. And since i'm new to linux, I didn't know how to launch the gui. And that's when I format the drive and reinstall everything. again.

After fighting the terminal temptation, I start using Ubuntu like how a Mac user would. Play dumb. And its rather rewarding. The system didn't crash, and I even manage to make Ubuntu to look like a Mac with just using mouse clicks. No terminals needed.

Mid OS crisis

I'm experimenting with Ubuntu, a move forced to make when I got a warning letter from the anti-piracy enforcement agency saying that they will be dropping by for a spot check. Sure I can hide the PC but for how long? Furthermore I wouldn't have to learn Ubuntu if I can get boxed Win7 professional in PJ, but then, the PC is old, so it probably couldn't run it anyways. In the meantime I bought new PCs preloaded with genuine Win7 and Office which cost as more then the darn entry level PC. Good thing there is such thing as 0% interest easy payment.

Anyways, when the word linux is mentioned, one would think a super customized hacker's OS. In fact this is how I picture my ubuntu to look like:

On the other hand, there is the ubuntu software center which functions very similarly to app store on the iphone. Just with a simple click and it'll download and install itself. It made life soooooo much simpler compared to the first time I tried redhat 5 eons ago.

Then again, the choice is limited. I still need to learn to compile in terminal for other software that is not in the software center.

Facebook: The Movie

I would have given it a cheesy name, but The Social Network is suffice to identify itself. Afterall, Facebook is THE social network. I don't know the real story of facebook, infact I was reluctant to hop onto the bandwagon when facebook open its doors to others outside its exclusive network, not until almost all my friends are already in facebook and I got repetitive invites only did i budge and see for myself what the hype is all about.

Anyways, the movie is entertaining from start till finish. I'm not sure if Mark Zuckerberg is like the movie Mark Zuckerberg, but knowing Hollywood, accuracy shouldn't be a priority and I left my brain in neutral and let the movie does its magic.

I'm really surprised that they made the movie seems very ordinary. There's no special transformation of character like in the movie 21. There's also no distinctive good guy or bad guy, though I would have perceived Mark starting facebook eventhough he agreed on Harvard Connection as a breach of trust, but... there's no binding contract, or it wasn't shown in the movie.

I guess I've spoiled enough, go watch the movie if you have a facebook account. :)

Its been a while

Yes, it HAS been a while, a real long while since I last posted. I've wanted to make a few blog post in october, mostly about backlogged stuff that happened the months before, but I guess I've to do it this month instead. Only one post in october, and that post made it seems that I'm dead, lol. Well, I'm always on facebook if anyone need to contact me.

Anyways..........

There's LOTS to blog about, especially about some life changing moments. Okay, that's way too dramatic. What I meant was changes in lifestyle and responsibilities. I've became a committee member for the apartment that I'm going to reside in. Yes, going to, as in I've yet to move in. It's 8 months since I got the key and that place is still vacant with bucket of paint and poly filler neatly placed on top of newspapers that carpet the floor. I would've made RM6300 if I've rented out the place sooner. That's enough to cover 7 months installment and part of the maintenance fee. Or I can buy a new 42" LCD TV with that.

Anyhow, back to the committee thingy, think of it as wakil rakyat for the apartment. I know that's not the best definition, but that's what I personally feel like. Whenever there's a complaint, it goes to the JMC when the residents feel the management didn't layan them. Just like DBKL lah.

Speaking of complaints, we have our resident Lim Keat Siang. Like the real thing, he's very vocal and passionate about the welfare of the residents. He barks at the right tree, he barks at the wrong tree, any tree and anything, he barks. There is one time he even commented about how dangerous the pool area is for children with sharp edges pillars that support the gazebo. Now, since you can't see it for yourself, let me describe it. it's not shaped like an ice pick, its square and the corners is like those of a Rubik cube, nicely polished round edge. While a Rubik cube doesn't kill as its made of plastic, these concrete pillars that support the gazebo roof has potential to split a skull open if one decides to run head-on onto the 'sharp' edge like an alpha male ram trying to prove its worth. But then again, you'll need to be four feet tall and must be able to pick up speed like Usain Bolt for that to happen. Even common sense tells that running on slippery pool tiles is dangerous. This is just one of his least ridiculous rant.

Also, he isn't much a looker, so, having to layan him as he goes on and on and on, is not the most pleasant thing to do. I know its a shallow comment, but its true.

And he also have a personal vendetta against some other tenant which is what I believe fuel his 'passion' and also at the same time the very thing that cloud his judgment. Like reading the bible, some people will interpret it differently then others. And there's this meeting minute that he misinterpret because it concerns the grudge he has against and will rant about it for a good half an hour.

The saying goes, there's little harm done for those who knows nothing, and for those who knows everything. It's those who knows little and made a full conclusion of it does the most damage. well, something like that.

Lucky for me, its only one of him who really take effort to meet up with JMCs. Others are keyboard warriors who rant online and never bother to make anything official during the AGM.

Being part of the JMC does has it perks. The service is better (always with a smile)and my complaints/request will be given priority. Exactly like whats happening now at any local municipal councils. Furthermore I also know how my maintenance fee is being spent, in great detail. The final accounts posted in the AGM barely constitute as a summary, in fact I find it way too simplified. And that's how miscommunication and misconception happens and breeds amongst the keyboard warriors and especially the local LKS.

There's more to talk about, but i'll stop here

Triple Cheese Burger

another food post, noting much to blog on the days when i'm free, but when i have something to post i'll be too busy to even remember to blog about it. ~_~

Before this was the GCB, the grilled chicken burger, which i didn't like at all. so bad that it didn't deserve even negative attention. Just recently, McD introduced triple cheese burger. nothing fancy, they just add another layer of beef patty and cheese slice, so don't expect anything out of the ordinary or out of this world experience.

they even throw in a free mc shaker upgrade for large fries, no surprise, its cheese flavor. The seasoning used tasted exactly like Super Rings. so if you like super rings you'll like it. for me, it tasted cheap as the cheesy and salty super rings flavor is coated over tasteless fried crisp. McD french fries are salted which makes the mix extra salty and some how potato and super rings flavoring doesn't fusion well enough.

Durain Galore

Here's a little post of what happened a few weeks ago. To compensate for the lack of post, i'll fill up with pictures instead. :P

if you are south eastern Asian, or Asian I'm pretty sure that this fruit needs no introduction. Hailed as the king of fruits by Malaysians for its thorny appearance which require a wool glove and a cleaver to pry it open. and its also known for its awesomely pungent smell and flesh that looks like something that you see every day on the pavement, road, grass that was accessed by dogs.

When I have durian, I'd normally go for the best quality, like those being sold in supermarkets. The durians were liberated from the thorny shell and packed in Styrofoam tray and clink wrap where you can see the color of the flesh and also feel the texture by pressing it gently. Having these high grade durians at exorbitant price is like having french cheese. You indulge in the taste.

The buffet that I went however serves one purpose, fill up the stomach with as much durians as possible. sounds like a dream come true for durian lovers, however stuffing down creamy durians which is ridiculously high in calorific value down the throat is more torture then pleasure.

anyhow, this is the first time I had an all you can eat durian buffet. The word buffet is loosely used as being able to eat as much as you want. but the choice of the durians is limited to the fee, rm10 gives you durian kampung, rm15 offers the higher grade and most popular amongst Malaysians D24 which is what we ordered.

I'm no expert in durian quality grading and can barely tell the difference between durian kampund and D24 other then the size of the flesh. The texture and taste of the fruit that came to our table varies like the color of the rainbow. There are those that's dry and tough as leather which was later thrown, and also those that's was watery as if its been sitting in a pond for weeks also thrown away. There are also some rotten ones which was quickly removed by our 'waiters' and replaced with new ones. All the durains were opened infront of us. But all the durians that entered our month were the nice creamy flesh ones, mostly sweet, only two or three of the many fruits were bitter. I like it bitter.
